Preventing a Mix-up


Eli Lilly and Company is committed to the safety of patients and ensuring that they are being dispensed the correct medications. Packaging for ZYPREXA® (olanzapine) has been changed to make identification even easier. All bottles of ZYPREXA have a tamper-resistant seal on the cap along with a revised bottle label.

Label changes include:
  • Picture of tablet on label
  • Tamper-resistant seal on cap
  • Yellow highlights for "PREXA"
  • Lower case "Y"
  • Tamper warning printed in red

Recommendations on How to Reduce the Risk of Medication Errors
  • Alert all pharmacists to the possibility of mix-ups when prescribing ZYPREXA and Zyrtec® (cetirizine HCl)
  • When accepting telephone orders, repeat back all orders, spell the product name, and ask for the indication
  • Highlight to clearly distinguish letters that are similar on storage bin labels
  • Verify the indications with the patient
  • Double-check the container with the prescription
  • Encourage patients to ask questions about their medications
